Architecture in Greece is influenced by the intense natural light, while Plaka is a neighborhood that distinguishes itself from others via its authenticity and character. Walking around Plaka one becomes part of the scenery while the guiding elements through those movements appear to be a discreet paving pattern designed by Greek Architect Dimitris Pikionis. The project engages into interplay between the elements of pattern & light where one follows the other as the visitor moves on the different spaces of the house. An intriguing combination between two elements of simplicity & texture.

This 100m2 apartment, overlooking the Parthenon, was a little gloomy and in need of brightening. Long and narrow hallway and a series of fragmented, inefficient sized rooms result into a dark zone in the core of the flat.

The long separation wall found in the corridor and the kitchen walls are demolished in order to unify the spaces. This action promotes an open plan movement through the space but more importantly it enlarges the study area that through specific wall treatments transforms into a brighter area. A perfect mirror and a smooth white surface offer the potential of transmitting further light in this previously very dark space.

The floor pattern follows the light that enters into the space. As one walk through the different rooms the floor pattern changes to help illuminate the spaces. The material of the floor switches from wood to white tile in order to accommodate the different areas. A white tile is chosen for the kitchen and bathroom floors while a lighter wood is found on the rest of the apartment.
